Dear AEFS students


We have come to the end of the course, and I hope you have improved in all—or at least some—areas. Please continue with your hard work, as it will help you achieve your goals. I know there have been some ups and downs during the learning period, but they have made our course more interesting and realistic.

It has been my pleasure to teach you, and I wish you all the very best as you pursue your future career. Good luck in whatever you choose to do next.

  Reference materials are various sources that provide background information or quick facts on any given topic. While there are many different types of resources, here are a few: almanacs, atlases, bibliographies, biographical resources, dictionaries, encyclopedias (both general and by subject), handbooks, indexes, statistics, and citation guides.

Reporting Verbs in English
A reporting verb is a word that is used to talk about or report on other people's work. Reporting verbs can be used to great effect, but the difficulty with using them is that there are many, and each of them has a slightly different and often subtle meaning.

TEXT TYPE - REPORTS

 report is a document that presents information in an organised format for a specific audience and purpose. Although summaries of reports may be delivered orally, complete reports are almost always in the form of written documents. Reports are professional documents so need to be written in a formal and concise style.

Each week you will need to collect news clippings about current issues and the most useful sources are The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian and The Daily Telegraph. Current concerns are usually, immediately covered by the press and it will mean you become familiar with some of the local and macro environment.

JOURNAL ARTIC LES

 WEEK 3 - 6 JOURNAL ARTICLES

Journal articles are shorter than books and written about very specific topics. journal is a collection of articles (like a magazine) that is published regularly throughout the year. Journals present the most recent research, and journal articles are written by scholars or professionals who are experts in their field. They may be published in print or online formats, or both. 

The language of scholarly journals is that of the discipline covered. It assumes some technical background on the part of the reader.
The main purpose of a scholarly journal is to report on original research or experimentation in order to make such information available to the rest of the scholarly world.

Complete the following tasks:


TASK 1:
  • Watch 'What is a journal article?', and get familiar with the text type
  • Watch Journal vs Popular Articles and discuss the differences
  • Watch 'Elements of Journal Articles'
  • Watch 'Tips for reading journal articles

TASK 2:
  • Find a journal article of your interest (health, education, sport etc.)
  • Write your notes using the different parts of the journal/periodical
  • Complete your summary based on your notes
